Balance, Karma, Action and Reaction, Golden Rule, Yin&Yang, Equilibrium... sounds like Equivalent exchange? Different origins but same meaning... Cool?
But sometimes, no matter how big your sacrifice... you will never get the thing you want the most.

Actually, it makes more sense if you factor in a more widespread (now) religious/spiritual belief in reincarantion as well as Karma or even the concept of Heaven and Hell. For the Christians and Catholics: "First he must descend through Hell (The Recognition of Sin), then he must ascend through Purgatory (The Renunciation of Sin), and only then may he reach the pinnacle of joy and come to the Light of God [Heaven]." - Canto I, The Inferno, Dante (As translated by John Ciardi, 1982). So, basically, if you don't get what you strive for, you will get it in the afterlife. Still an Equivalent Exchange, just not in the form of instant gratification.
It's not about getting what you 'want' back, It's about getting something, anything that's of equal value back. You will always eventually get something back that's of equal value.
